Artist Elandré performs

The Craft

Beate Strydom of The Birdcage, Stellenbosch, will be demonstrating the art of cake decorating.

For as long as he can remember he’s been practicing his autograph for that “one day” when his music gets all dressed up in an album cover. Well, one day and today just became synonymous with the launch of Elandré’s long- awaited debut album, “Kleindorp- dromer”.

The then 21 year-old from Despatch in the Eastern Cape got the surprise of a lifetime in November 2016 when Select Musiek’s Ernst Kleinhans offered him a recording contract during a live performance on Bok Radio 98.9 FM and Bok TV. Months of hard work later the final product – an album that comprises 13 tracks in Afrikaans and English – is on the shelves, and from the outset it’s clear that big things are on the cards for this young talent.

Elandré’s baritone voice has a unique richness and depth, while it also often explores an impressively high register – effortlessly blending with pop, rock, country and more alternative flavours. His debut piece is one with a free spirit – patriotic, introspective, poetic, romantic, joined with an almost carefree element of youth.

From the more upbeat “Afrikaans sal bly”, “Plek sonder naam” and “Honderd duisend maal” to more easy listening tracks like “Die lyn”, “Stilte voor die storm” and “Skadu’s teen my muur”, it’s not the music of “yesterday’s child”, and the lyrics of his own creations bear testament to thoughts and emotions that were meticulously crafted over time to eventually find a voice in music.

The more playful country flavour of “Forever” – as well as cover versions of country tracks like Josh Turner’s “Your man”, “Tonight I climbed the wall” by Alan Jackson and a good dose of rock with “Tougher than the rest” by Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen – showcases Elandré’s musical versatility brilliantly and leaves no doubt about why he is one of South Africa’s most in demand young artists for live performances.

“This is huge. It’s a dream that I’ve dreamt for very long, since I was a child”, says Elandré. “It’s a completely surreal experience – almost as if my heart and brain can’t take it all in at once. I am deeply grateful to each and every one who played a role in bringing me to, and keeping me on, this path and dedicate this album to each one of them – above all to the One without whom none of us would be able to do what we do. Like the lyrics on the last track of the album says: ‘Remember your light and Whose child you are.’”

The album is now available countrywide.
